All races in the Fell Runners Association calendar are classified in two ways, by length and by difficulty.
Three race lengths are used:
• L (Long)- 12 miles or over
• M (Medium)- 6 miles or over, but under 12 miles
• S (Short)- Under 6 miles
Classifications are
• ‘A’ races should average not less than 250ft of climbing per mile, be at least 1 mile in length and have less than 20% of the distance on road.
• ‘B’ races should average not less than 125ft climbing per mile and have no more than 30% of the distance on road.
• ‘C’ races should average not les than 100ft of climbing per mile, contain some genuine fell terrain and have not more than 40% of the distance on road.
Every race is therefore defined by two letters e.g.
Winter Hill Fell Race (AM) - This is an ‘A’ classified race of medium length as above.
